What are other families saying?

"This was amazing for my daughter and I. The coaches are attuned to the whole person and provide a physically and emotionally safe learning and playing environment. The guides are consummate professionals with expertise in backcountry leadership, group facilitation, therapeutic experiences, and experiential education. They do all this and still manage to keep things light with appropriate humor and delicious food. You won’t regret going on a trip with these coaches and guides.

Truly inspiring!"

Lori, Parent

"This was such an amazing experience not just the family dynamics but how much I gained from the trip as a whole. I didn’t realize how much I needed this experience and how much it helped me transition into college life! I was reminded of why I loved expeditions like this after wilderness therapy being a not so great experience. I also rediscovered pure happiness and figuring out what I define as ‘home’ after this past year defining it as being a final destination/goal. I have so much appreciation for the coaches and guides and will never forget all the memories I made this summer."

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens on the trip?

Each day we travel downriver, meandering between beautiful, red cliffs towering into the blue sky above. We will spend time swimming, playing, going on side hikes, and playing games to support families in meaningful family connections. Whether in the canoe or in camp, our guides and coaches are supporting the logistics and the connection through shared meals and guided conversations. It’s not clinical or structured like therapy—just practical guidance and real conversations that happen naturally throughout the experience.

What does a typical day look like?

Mornings start with breakfast and a relaxed group check-in before activities. Each day we will depart camp and head on to the river to arrive at our next camp. Evenings include dinner, campfire conversation, and a short reflection or coaching session before turning in for the night. Every day balances activity with space to unwind and reconnect. There will be playful activities to bring everyone into joy and togetherness.

Who leads the trip?

You’ll be guided by the professional team at Breakwater Expeditions, who have more than 20 years of wilderness adventure experience, along with a Solutions Family Support coach who specializes in family communication and connection. Both are with you every step of the way to ensure a safe and meaningful experience.

Do we need to be experienced campers or paddlers?

Not at all. No prior paddling or camping experience is required. All gear, training, and support are provided. Paddling days are designed for families and include frequent breaks. If you enjoy being outside, you’ll be right at home.

Where do we stay?

You’ll camp in a beautiful, secluded area along the river each night. The first and last night of your journey will be in a hotel in Grand Junction, Colorado. All camping gear, meals, and supplies are included. We camp in high-quality tents and on inflatable sleeping pads, designed to give you space and comfort.

How is it different from therapy?

This isn’t therapy, it’s therapeutic. Coaching focuses on building communication, trust, and confidence through shared experience, not clinical treatment. You’ll come home with tools you can actually use every day, not just good intentions. The activities and programming will be customized to the needs of each family. As simple as playing a game together will bring out information and opportunity to families to look inward to how they are showing up with their loved ones. It is our goal to provide you with observation, education, and empathy to help guide and nurture relationships.

What if our family is not getting along right now?

That’s completely okay — most families don’t arrive perfectly in sync. This experience is designed to lower stress, ease tension, and help you reconnect in new ways.

If your family is currently in a significant crisis or needs intensive therapeutic support, this may not be the right fit at the moment. We’d love to talk with you and help point you in the right direction — please reach out so we can explore together
